The SUNY and CUNY Reconnect Initiative
In February, Kathy Hochul announced a new partnership between the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board, the State University of New York (SUNY), and the City University of New York (CUNY), to help injured New York workers access free community college for a high-demand field.
Through the Reconnect Initiative, eligible New Yorkers currently out of work can now have the opportunity to pursue a cost-free associate degree, including free tuition, fees, books, and other supplies needed. This program aims to encourage workers to learn new skills and find a new career path following work-related injuries and illnesses.
Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors from the New York State Workers’ Compensation Board will play a significant role in the initiative by helping eligible workers explore these new educational opportunities and connecting them with the free college programs.
Kathy Hochul, Governor of New York, stated “SUNY and CUNY Reconnect are life-changing programs that have already helped thousands of New Yorkers seize new opportunities to earn degrees in high-demand fields. As we work to expand these programs and include new degree opportunities, I also want to ensure that every eligible New Yorker is aware of the opportunities they have to earn a degree, secure a good job, and help move New York forward.”
